Suite à Get Lifted en 2004 et Once Again deux ans après, on s'attendait à du lourd de la part de Mr. Stephens
pour ce troisième album studio. Et Evolver ne déçoit pas : l'opus est dans l'ensemble agréable à écouter,
et fidèle au style de l'artiste. Des beats travaillés (par Kanye West, entre autres), des refrains planants, du piano,
toujours, et des lyrics d'amour : du grand John Legend.
Après une intro bucolique amorcée par des chants de petits oiseaux, on enchaîne directement sur les deux up-tempo
de l'album : Green Light, en feat. avec Andre 3000 d'Outkast, et It's Over en duo avec le compagnon
de toujours, Kanye West. La première peut s'avérer énervante – pour les adeptes du style smooth de John Legend – par
ses inspirations électro ; les moins récalcitrants y trouveront un côté rythmé assez original. La seconde
est plutôt entraînante, et nous donne l'occasion de vérifier que le chanteur est aussi à l'aise sur des
beat plus dynamiques. L'album compte pas mal de « bons titres », pas forcément des classiques en devenir,
mais qui valent bien des albums entiers de ce qui peut se faire ailleurs en ce moment… Surtout,
comme à son habitude, John nous offre des chansons planantes, puisque c'est le terme le plus adapté à sa voix,
son flow, ses mélodies, l'atmosphère qui se dégage de chacun de ses albums et qui fait qu'on reconnaît
un John Legend quasi-instantanément. Ses collaborations féminines (Brandy, Estelle) ne sont pas en reste,
et le titre aux inspirations reggae en featuring avec Estelle se place d'ailleurs comme l'un des meilleurs
morceaux de l'opus. Cross the Line, relatant une amitié qui se transforme en histoire d'amour,
Satisfaction – un mid accrocheur – et If You're Out There méritent également une oreille attentive.
Le seul titre un peu molasson, s'il faut trouver un côté négatif à cet album, est Good Morning, pas vraiment
adapté à un réveil dynamique pour le coup !
En résumé, ce nouvel opus de John Legend… courez l'acheter ! D'ici quelques écoutes,
il vous deviendra vite aussi indispensable que ses deux précédents albums studios : 16/20.

Après 11 ans de collaboration avec Jive Records, Joe nous présente en cette année 2008 son premier album en indépendant,
chez Kedar Entertainment. Rappelons que Kedar Massenburg est l'homme qui a signé D'Angelo et fait connaître Erykah Badu,
entre autres... Le moins que l'on puisse dire est que l'on attendait cet opus impatiemment : le rythmé Ermergency Room
et le festif Why Just Be Friends donnaient d'ailleurs l'eau à la bouche. Qu'en est-il du reste de l'album ?
« Actuel » serait le terme. Il plaira aux fans des productions de Brian Michael Cox, qui a collaboré à trois titres,
pas mauvais mais pas transcendants non plus. La chanson donnant son nom à l'album – New Man – est plutôt entrainante
et, encore une fois, dans l'air du temps. Mais le titre qu'il faudra retenir, pour tout(e) fan des albums précédents
All That I Am ou My Name Is Joe, reste sans conteste Heart Behind My Eyes : ce mid très juste
ne trahit pas le style qui nous a toutes fait tomber amoureuses de Mr Thomas. Il n'y a pas vraiment de mauvais
titres dans cet opus mais, pour les amateurs du style qui a fait la renommée de l'artiste entre 1997 et 2001,
il n'y a pas de quoi s'enthousiasmer outre mesure. On regrette en effet l'abandon des ballades langoureuses au profit
de mid arborant des beats à la mode et ne rendant pas justice au potentiel « loveresque » de notre homme.
On peut également reprocher à Joe ses 5 derniers titres – en réalité des snippets – qui, s'ils nous donnent
envie, ne sont pas très fair-play envers ses fans... On est d'ailleurs impatients d'entendre la version complète
de Wanna Be Your Lover, qui se rapproche beaucoup plus de ce qu'on a l'habitude d'entendre de la part du chanteur.
Le nouvel homme qu'est devenu Joe Thomas tente de s'inscrire dans un courant contemporain, mais aurait tout aussi
bien pu rester fidèle à lui-même, on ne lui en aurait pas voulu. Pour cette raison, il obtiendra un 13/20 et
une mention « Peut mieux faire ».

Trois ans depuis le précédent opus d'Eric Benét : le garçon commençait presque à se faire attendre.
Il nous revient en cette année 2008 avec Love & Life, son quatrième album officiel.
Le disque, émaillé de mid-tempo, est festif dans l'ensemble. On pourra à ce titre déplorer
l'absence de bonnes ballades, qui avaient ravi les fans du genre dans son précédent opus.
L'unique titre qui se veut plus romantique que les autres – Everlove en duo avec Terry Dexter –
tombe d'ailleurs dans le cliché, ou plutôt dans une marmite de guimauve.
Eh oui, tous les featurings féminins d'Eric Benét ne pourront pas rivaliser avec Spend My Life
With You ! Les deux titres les plus intéressants de l'album resteront Don't Let Go et Spanish Fly.
Ceux-ci se mémorisent facilement et se laisseront fredonner quelques temps après leur écoute.
Le second, aux inspirations salsa, apporte une fraîcheur latino bienvenue. Weekend Girls mérite
également une mention dans la catégorie « chanson légère au beat entraînant ». Côté instruments Eric Benét,
fidèle à ses habitudes, nous régale de titres faisant la part belle aux cuivres. Quant aux thèmes, ils restent
centrés autour des femmes, sous toutes leurs formes. L'album ne surprend pas, donc. Mais il nous contente.
Sans être le meilleur opus de l'artiste, Love & Life mérite un 15/20, car presque tous les titres sont bons.
Il manque peut-être juste des classiques en devenir…
